Hi! What’s the best way to get back into programming now, if my skills are ‘behind the curve’?

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 03:24 PM PST

I am a computer software test engineer, and in last 5 to 7 years have been assigned to job tasks that are less ‘technical’, or proprietary to my company . . i.e. related to specifically my company’s electronic business vs. for instance, Microsoft skills.

Is best path to go back to school, specific technical courses, or online self-training?

Am interested in others’ specific training plans, if they had to deal with same situation, please?

Was thinking of targeting Visual Studio 5.0, C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server . . . is that a good starting place? I need to be able to program and maintain ‘test harness’ code, most likely in C#, and possibly write other test automation code.

Would prefer answers from computing/IT professionals who have been in industry longer than 10 years please?

thanks, Mike B.

Which business idea should I pick?

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 01:24 PM PST

I would like to start an online company. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I have two ideas, 1 being a interactive type of site, and 2 being a standard online business. I’m not sure which one is profitable.

1. A website where people can siign up for free and sell, list, buy, trade, and auction off their websites and or domain names. Users would be charged a small fee to post a listing. They could then post info and photos of their site and people can buy the site for a buy now price, or get entered into an auction. I would have account ratings and telephone verification to help with security. There is already a site called flippa.com that does everything I just mentioned. The reason why people don’t like flippa is because the listing fee is to high. If I can lower th fee, and implement a marketing plan, I will have success. Flippa makes 4-5k a day just from advertisiments on their site. There are currently pre made scripts available for this type of site, and they only cost . The problem is, it is not a professional site, and I’m worried about bugs with the script. If I wanted to make this site, should I buy the pre made scripts, have an elance person build an okay site for 00, or hire a web design firm to build a top notch site for 10k? I am a teen, so my startup cash is limited.

Pros- limited competition, huge potential
Cons- huge startup
2. I would start a web hosting company by reselling web hosting plans. I would join a companies reseller program, and create a website and promote hosting plans. The company keeps the wholesale cost, and I keep the markup. So if it’s 40 a year and I mark up to 65 a year, I keep 25 a year for that customer. It is recurring income. If I get a modest 2 people per day, I would have 730 clients by the end of the year. That means for the next year, I am making 18k from the people from the first year, while also gaining new clients. So every year, assuming that the client still is hosting with us, I am getting an additional 18k. So I’m making tons of money for years to come. I have heard of host gator and resellers panel which I think has good reseller plans. Resellerspanel has great profits and you get unlimited domains, a website to promote your company, 24/7/365 support, and marketing tools. Resellerspanel does not use cpanel though. They have their own site builder and control panel system which is a problem for clients who want or need cpanel. Host gator costs more than resellers panel, does not host as much space, but does come with cpanel. Would you recommend I use resellers panel, or any other hosting company.

Pros- super low startup costs, just need to promote, work any hours
Cons- a lot of competition, but hey, if you attract people to your site first and they like your plans, you get their sale.

Which idea is more profitable. Do you think any could make me six or more figures a year? Thanks.

1. Define: vying, breach, assertion, scrutiny, magnetometer, exploit, hoax, ambushed, paparazzi, breach, egregious

2. What would motivate someone to crash a White House party?

3. Do you think Americans are becoming more willing to “exploit themselves for fame and the hunger for ratings-grabbing events…”? Why/why not?

4. How is this case similar to the “Balloon Boy” incident? How is it different?

5. What is exploitation? Is it possible for people to exploit themselves?

6. “The media business is the new Ellis Island: Give me your talentless, give me your hoaxes and I will put anything on my air.” Explain this reference.

7. Who is responsible for this kind of celebrity-seeking behavior? The individuals who engage in the behavior, or the media?

Which online business idea should I pick?

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 07:26 AM PST

Hello. I would like to start an online business/company over the summer. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I have two ideas which I think could be really profitable. The problem is, I was quoted 40-50 thousand to make each site (except for the other business ideas). I just dont have that kind of money to even build one site. I will list the ideas below, and could you please tell me which idea you think is more profitable. How should I go about building the site? Should I hire someone on craigslist, rent a coder, etc.? Or should I try to build it my self? What should I use? I dont know programming or coding or web design.

1. My first idea is a website where users can submit original songs and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with other users. Users could also create a page where they could post info, and find new band members. I like this idea since the only competition is www.purevolume.com. PureVolume is making 0 a day! If I make a better site, why can’t i make that or more? I would sell ad space on the site. Accounts would be free, but if the site became big enough, I would create a pro membership that costs money in addition to the free account. If you think this idea could be profitable, how should I go about creating the site? I got quoted 40-50k to build by a web design firm. Should I use Kickapps which lets you create a social network site where user submit content (videos, MUSIC, videos etc.) for a small fee? Should I hire a developer on rent a coder?

2. My second idea is a website where users could post, list, sell, buy, auction, and trade websites. An ebay or amazon marketplace for websites. Users would post the site link with info and a snapshot and price, and other users would buy the site if they wanted to. I would take a small 4% commision from the sale. I would also sell ad space on the website. This website has some competition such as websitebroker.com, flippa.com, and sitepoint.com, but the potential is huge, and there is room for another player. If you think this site is profitable, how should I build it? Should I hire someone or build it myself. If build it myself, how should I build it?

3. My third idea is to sign up for resellerdynamics. You pay 00 to them and they give you liscense to re sell there website building software on your own website and charge fees per month. they were reviewed in small business opportunity mag as a good opportunity and bbb says they are legit.

4. My last idea is to make a website with lots of articles, reviews, comparisons, etc. on cell phones. I would also sign up to be an affiliate with verizon, att, sprint, etc., and sell phones on my site. I know there are a lot of competition out there such as phonearena, phonedog, cnet, and mobiledia, but each site doest the same thing as the other site, and they all are making great money. By the way, is a website like this or a website in general considered a company? Could you be a CEO of the company that runs the website. Like if I call the site www.sprocketfish.com, could I make a company called Sprocketfish Inc. that runs the website and could I be CEO of Sprocketfish Inc.?

I really want to make one of these websites with as low startup as possible. I know I would have to market like crazy and do site matinence, but please help me. My parents think i should do a business like normal teens where you mow the lawn, babysit, etc, but I really want to do online business and hopefully make a good living. I think my sites ideas have potential. Which idea should I do? Which idea is more profitable? Even if you think they are not profitable, which would you choose if you had to? How should I build it?

Thanks!

PS, I am becoming a dealer at Kaeser and Blair and selling promotinal products to get me some startup cash for my online companies (websites).

Thanks!!

bank of america…im confused…savings account?

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 07:19 AM PST

I really don’t know what’s up with these guys. Long story short, I have a cake business at home, and I am 17 years old. I’m a regular at BOA because I have a SAVINGS account. Its under my dad’s name as well…so is my younger bro, and older sis. I dont know how that works but whatever. They keep telling me to get a debit card which would be AMAZING. I can buy my baking supplies online with ease without having to use crappy 25-50 dollar gift cards….He wont let me yet b/c i am in the midst of job hunting…..interview with target to be specific…haha. Well anyway, everytime i go i see these amazing people, and they understand what i do at home and what i put into this business. they let me do withdrawals with ease. Today some euro chick wouldnt let me withdrawal because i need my dad with me…? Since when…? I hate how they look at me like im some kind of kid. Im basically almost legal…So what should I do…?
